RARE Lithograph History of the Indian Tribes of North America McKenney & Hall
RARE Lithograph “History of the Indian Tribes of North America” McKenney & Hall. RARE ORIGINAL (Not a Copy) Hand Colored Lithograph “History of the Indian Tribes of North America” McKenney & Hall. By Charles Bird King, Waa-Pa-Shaw, a Sioux Chief. This portrait is from “The History of the Indian Tribes of North America, ” ca. 1838, hand-colored lithograph on paper. Sheet: 10 7/16″ by 6 15/16″ A true piece of Native American history! Appears to be a very clean lithograph. McKenney was Superintendant of The Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1816 until 1830. He was one of a very few government officials to defend American Indian interests and attempt to preserve their culture. He travelled to Indian lands meeting the Native American leaders. He brought with him an accomplished artist, James Otto Lewis, who sketched those willing to participate. A large number of the most influential Indian chiefs and warriors were later invited to come to Washington in 1821 to meet President Monroe. McKenney commissioned the prominent portrait painter Charles Bird King, who had a studio in the capital, to paint these native American leaders, who chose the costumes they wished to wear for the sitting. The magnificent resultant paintings were displayed in the War Department until 1858, and were then moved to the Smithsonian Institute. When Andrew Jackson dismissed McKenney in 1830, he gave him permission to have the King portraits as well as some by other artists, including George Catlin and James Otto Lewis, copied and made into lithographs, in both folio and octavo sizes. McKenney partnered with James C. Hall, a Cincinnati judge and novelist to publish the lithographs and the text written by Hall. The work was extremely expensive to create and nearly bankrupted McKenney, as well as the two printing firms who invested in its publication. The resultant work gained importance when Catlin’s paintings were destroyed in a warehouse fire and Charles Bird King’s and James Otto Lewis’ portraits were destroyed in the great Smithsonian Museum fire of 1865. The McKenney and Hall portraits remain the most complete and colorful record of these pre-Civil War Native American leaders. This item is in the category “Art\Art Prints”. 1793 Bartram’s Travels INDIANS Cherokee Seminole Florida Carolinas America RARE. Of high value as an original authority on Southern Indians during the period of the Revolutionary War. William Bartram was an 18. Century American historian who is best-known for his explorations in George, Florida, and the Carolinas. Initially, Bartram had intended to explore plant life and visit rice fields in the American South; however, the journey quickly became much more focused on his encounters with Native American Indians. His voyage brought him to the Seminole people in Florida, the Creek and Indians in Alabama, as well as Cherokee and Choctaw tribes in the Appalachians. The reports and discoveries from this trip were published in ” Bertram’s Travels ” in 1791 – easily, one of the most important 18. Century accounts of Indians in the American South. In fact, Reese says that this book ” is credited with influencing everyone from Coleridge to Thoreau “. Bartram wrote with all the enthusiasm and interest with which the fervent old Spanish friars and missionaries narrated the wonders of the new found world. He neglected nothing which would add to the common stock of human knowledge. Unequalled for the vivid picturesqueness of its descriptions of nature, scenery, and productions. Travels through North and South Carolina : Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee country… Containing an account of the soil and natural productions of those regions. Collation: complete with all pages. 4 engravings plus frontispiece (of 7 and wanting map). References: Howes B 223; Sabin 3872; Reese, Federal Hundred 33; Field B 94; Larned 1235. All of my books are VERY OLD and have 100+ years of wear to varying degrees. Boards – very secure, some wear to the edges of the back board. Very good back [half inch split at the bottom] – front 1 with a professional repair to re-attach the front cover – see last picture- looks like that all the way down. Very good bottom / some wear to the top 1. Worn through a bit and touched up. Inner hinges – very good back / pretty good front. Pages – light to moderate spotting throughout [mostly light though] / stain at the edge of most of the pages – it missed the color engravings, which is highly unusual – also, from page 627 -725 that stain is much larger – see picture 11. Rips /folds – 1 very small rip that I saw / 1 fold /. Picture 9 shows a wee tip that is missing [yellow paper behind it]. Marbling on page edges still pretty bright /. A really cool book. It can take up to 14 days to get back East, it’s rare, but it does happen. And remember -this book is very old and may have accumulated bad smells along the way [musty basement/ mildew/ smoke] – I have found that dryer sheets in them for a few months makes a world of difference! As far as I can tell -this book has no bad smell. LIFE IS SHORT -and there are better things to do, feel free to copy my text if it saves you time! Discovery of America by the Northmen.
